Climate Mitigation in the Balkans: bridging practice and theory

Climate challenges highlight the urgent need for collective action and strategic planning to mitigate the effects of climate change and build resilience in communities across the Balkans region. What topics will the webinar address?

The webinar will provide theoretical insights into the environmental challenges and communities’ practices across Romania, Bulgaria, and Greece. The participants will delve into the climate issues each country faces, climate mitigation measures, as well as role of citizens in climate resilience. The webinar will feature the following speakers:

  • Lina Liakou (Global Director of City Engagement & Practice, Resilient Cities Network) is a senior professional with international expertise in city governance, sustainability and resilience. An inspiring leader and strategic thinker with experience in transforming cities and organizations. She is currently leading the Resilient Cities Network’s global city engagement work and the network’s resilience practice in Europe and the Middle East. Prior to that, Lina was Deputy Mayor for Urban Resilience and Development Planning for the City of Thessaloniki in Greece. Lina is a trained architect and urban designer.
  • Mara Angelidou (Greece) is the Co-Founder & Director of ‘incommon’ a non-profit organisation which works on circular economy through community activation, in order to tackle climate crisis both on environmental and on social level. As an Architect Engineer with MSc in “Environment and Development”, she is a specialist in the management of environmental, community and humanitarian projects aimed at sustainable development in cities which involve the proper management of waste, the circular economy, social crises in urban centres, social innovation, active citizenship and participative design. She has participated as a volunteer or researcher and worked on projects in Greece, Portugal, England, Kenya and Indonesia.
  • Alexei Savin (Romania) is licensed as a Forest Engineer since 1998 within the University of Suceava and has PhD in the field of Forestry. Alexei is a Head of Studies in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Protection from University of Suceava. His expertise is related to the Soil Science and Forest Ecology. Alexei is the author of numerous academic publications on the environment as well as a speaker at conferences on the same topics. 
  • Iliev Ilian (Bulgaria) has a master’s degree in “Ecology and Environmental Protection”, graduated from the Technical University in the city of Varna in 1996. He works as an Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development Expert. Founder and Chairman of the Management Board of the environmental non-governmental organization “Public Center for Environment and Sustainable Development”. For over 15 years, he has been actively working on issues related to climate change, climate adaptation and facilitating the procedures for installation and operation of RES in households. Organizer and coordinator of conferences and advocacy campaigns on the topic.

The participants will have a chance to join the dialogue with the experts, as well as to participate in separate discussions with stakeholders from other countries. 

For whom? 

The webinar is conducted in English and is open to representatives of grassroots sector, experts, policy makers and those interested in the topics of civic engagement, urban design and environment from the Balkan region.
