Project overview

Placemaking for Climate Mitigation (P4CM) is a regional project funded by the Citizens, Equality, Rights, and Values program of the European Union, focused on addressing pressing climate challenges in the Balkans. The project works to foster collaboration between communities, public authorities, and experts from Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece, using placemaking to transform public spaces into climate-resilient hubs.

Mission

P4CM seeks to strengthen community engagement in tackling environmental issues such as waste management, unplanned urbanization, and extreme weather. By enhancing public understanding and cooperation, the project promotes a collective response to climate challenges, enabling communities to adapt their urban spaces sustainably.

Objectives

1

Building understanding of the environmental agenda: The project seeks to create an understanding of the environmental agenda among the public, civic organizations, and experts through organizing series of deliberations among the stakeholders.

2

Engaging communities: The project aims to gather opinions related to the environment and climate action from communities through placemaking activities. By involving the public in these activities, potential environmental challenges on the community, neighborhood level can be identified.

3

Empowering cooperation for environmental actions: The project aims to build capacities in the public, civic, and expert sectors to cooperate effectively in environmental actions. By providing knowledge and tools for collaboration, the project encourages joint efforts in addressing environmental challenges.

4

Fostering regional collaboration: The project also aims to create a Balkan understanding of the environmental agenda. By promoting knowledge exchange, partnerships, and networking, stakeholders can support each other in their environmental initiatives.

Key Principles

Collaboration and engagement of diverse stakeholders—citizens, public authorities, and experts—from local to regional levels.

Community-Centric Approach by empowering local communities to co-create climate solutions through placemaking.

Prioritizing eco-friendly, climate-resilient solutions for urban spaces.

Transparency and Inclusivity

Approach

P4CM uses a placemaking approach to reimagine everyday spaces by involving communities in their design.
